My name is Zach Steinberger and I currently play for the Indy Eleven, the professional soccer team in Indianapolis. I have been a student at Invoke since December of 2017 when I was looking for a good yoga studio as a way of cross training to supplement my offseason training regimen. Invoke yoga prepared me for this season and has kept me healthy throughout the first 3 months of a grueling schedule with nearly 2 games every week.
So many players in professional sports, including the Indy Eleven this season, have been sidelined due to injuries. Injuries occur in sports for a multitude of reasons and there is nothing athletes can do from preventing a collision, tackle, or any rough contact for that matter. However, I do believe that for the most part muscle injuries can be avoided with proper preparation and body maintenance.
There are many different ways athletes can maintain strength, stamina, speed, agility, balance, flexibility, etc. Most athletes employ some system of weight lifting throughout the season to accomplish these goals. However, with the demanding schedule of professional athletics that is simply just not enough anymore. There are a lot more games in professional soccer now than there was even 10 years ago and the game is evolving in to a much more fast-paced and physically intensive sport.
I have been practicing yoga for a couple years now and I am still discovering benefits to my body and overall health after 2 years of continuous practice. At first, I started to become more flexible which was my primary objective in beginning my practice. However, flexibility also opened up a plethora of new advantages that I had never considered before. My new-found flexibility allowed me to challenge myself in new poses. My expanded yoga practice contributed to an increase in my core strength. And once my core became stronger I began to play with inversions and binds.
For the longest time, I never understood what some yoga teachers meant when they said, “this is your practice”. Now I realize that the benefits of yoga are completely different for each individual because not one person shares the exact same practice. Our bodies are just as much unique to us as our fingerprints.
For that reason, I wanted to explore what other advantages I could unlock for myself through yoga. Most recently, I have discovered that yoga has brought about a new revitalized energy throughout my everyday life. I try to do yoga in the morning now as much as possible and my days are filled with so much more natural energy. I find myself not needing that second or third cup of coffee in the afternoon.
It is still surprising to me that I have had years of fitness coaches preaching the necessity to spend hours in the gym lifting heavy weights and running on the treadmill. I have seen so many more benefits in the past couple years of practicing yoga then all of the hours I spent in the gym at the beginning of my career.
Invoke has been an absolute life saver this season for me. Yoga at Invoke has kept me free of muscle injuries and helped me build core, upper, and lower body strength. I have more energy throughout my day and I cannot wait to see what benefits yoga brings in to my life next. What’s crazy is that yoga isn’t even my favorite part about Invoke. My favorite thing about Invoke is the people I have met at the studio. It truly is a great community to be a part of with even better people, in which everyone is welcome.
Lastly, I believe yoga has an endless amount of benefits and because Invoke offers such a wide range of classes, there is no limit to the benefits I or anybody else for that matter can receive.
